Power in Change, Inc. was established to help low-income children, who need skills to become productive citizens, through after school programs. Children who find themselves out on their own at age 18, have no skills and little education, often end up in jail, in gangs or dead. We will offer them a second chance to improve their lives. I created Power in Change because I was once homeless and on drugs, in and out of jails. I know what it feels like to be helpless, wanting something better for myself and not knowing how to get it. My goal is to give back and to give forward. My experience working as a youth tennis instructor, working in a rehabilitation center as a volunteer reentry program counselor, and volunteering to feed the homeless has been my way of helping in the past. Now Power in Change, Inc. will expand my vision to help more young people in many more ways
We will offer a safe place where young people can learn skills, with opportunities to be linked with contractors around the city to get employment. On the job training is an important part of the vision. If anyone is homeless, we will find a safe environment for them to live in. Counselors will be on hand to offer support with homework for those involved in the afterschool programs, tutoring programs and much more. Computer classes will be available for every level of knowledge. Our goal is to purchase a building to house after-school programs, a tutoring center and recreation facility.
